Mise En Scene - Front.Back & Form - 4.1 DVD surround - Leerraum [ ]
BGN, WHITE_LINE, 2008.

Once again, leerraum have broken new ground by introducing the work of Mise En Scene, the sonic projection of one Shay Nassi, who lives and works in Tel Aviv. This 4.1 surround excursion showcases the work of Nassi, and is best described as “clicks and cuts”. However, and in usual leerraum style, this work is not so easily classified or pigeon-holed, as Nassi seeks out a new language for the genre, splicing his pointillist renderings with stark tones, and robust organic texturings, reminiscent of the hybrid offspring of Ryoji Ikeda and Merzbow. Indeed this release is infused with the spirit of a number of Japanoise leanings, and had I had to guess whose work this was blindfolded, I would undoubtedly have come up with somebody like KK Null, or perhaps Evala, such is the Jap-infused spirit of this release. However, Mis En Scene as an artistic entity in his own right is definitely worth investigating, as the work here is clean, and technically precise, and the fusion of various influences makes for a fascinating listen, as brittle tonalism is juxtaposed with blippy rhythmics, to create active, granulated surfaces, and edgy metres and pulses. Fascinating.
